Minutes for Friday, May 21, 2004

 

Place: Horseshoe Lk. Restaurant, 12:00pm by Vice President Fred Ramsdell

Present: Marv & Myrtle Keizur, Barb Heard, Dennis Taylor, Ed Taylor, Todd Rosenbach, Marty Marcus, Nancy Lind, Don Tjossem, Fred & Mary Ramsdell, Ron Cleveland, Bek Ashby, Lois McMahan, Ross Bischoff.

Guest Speakers: Dennis Taylor, from Safe Streets gave an interesting talk on “Developmental Assets”, “What the Gig Harbor Key Peninsula Community Can Do to Help Kids Succeed”.

Secretary’s Report/Corres: MSC to approve the minutes from 05/07/04. Treasurer’s Report: Balance on hand is $3991.54

Old Business/Committees:

  1. Community Council – There are several local locations where survey boxes are located for entering registrations for the June 26th vote.  Over 250 people are currently registered.  A crime prevention task force involving Safe Streets and the Sheriff’s Dept. is being planned with monthly meetings starting July or August.  Interested volunteers are encouraged to attend.
  2. KP Fair – Fred said the Antique Engine Tractor Group would be a terrific addition.
  3. KP Livable Community Fair – Dennis said the fair was an outstanding success.
  4. Business Economic Development – Bek said one of the main issues from the May 18th meeting was how hard the permit process is for Pierce County. She suggested attending a Public Affairs Forum every Thursday morning at 7:30am at Cottesmore.
  5. Scholarship Committee –June and Barb enjoyed attending the Scholarship Awards Ceremony.  The two recipients were Aubree Glennon and Brittania Bennett.
  6. Road Clean Up –Scheduled for July.
  7. KPBA Website – Ed said the website has been revised and to look at the membership list.
  8. DNR Property/Peninsula Regional Parks – Ed said there will articles in the newspapers soon.

New Business:  None

Individual Reports:

  1. Marv said young people could join the Leo’s Club, which is a junior Lion’s Club. 2. Todd is concentrating his business on the north end of the Key Peninsula. 3. Ross is disappointed that the schools don’t have more vocational/agricultural studies. 4. Don related his chemical dependency counselor position at Purdy with “developmental assets”. 5. Mary said Angel Guild is losing volunteers due to health problems. 6. Fred said the Wauna Fire Station is waiting for its occupancy permit from the county. Four new fire engines are coming in July. 7. Ron said the Renaissance Fantasy Faire is having a fashion show, dinner, fund raiser with silent auction on June 5th.  8. Marty’s science night at a Kirkland school conflicted with Vaughn Elem. School’s carnival. 9. Bek is looking for kids to distribute pens to various businesses. 10. Ed said food vendors are apprehensive about coming to our KP Fair due to overly strict health rules. 11. Lois said there is dissatisfaction amongst teachers about the current WASL tests. 12. Nancy said the picnic table for Home Park is ready to be painted.
