Meeting Minutes for Friday, May 18, 2007

Place: Blondie’s in Key Center

Present: Jud Morris presiding. Laurie Jones, Genevieve Ellis, Laurie Ellis, Marlise Van Cise, Ruth Bramhall, Lois McMahan, Julie and Tom Boardman, Claude Gahard, Barbara Heard, Bek Ashby, Ed Taylor, Marty Marcus, Joe Rhea,  Jim Guinn, Joyce Tovey, Lynn Marshall, Bret Nebel,  and Chuck West .

 

Secretary’s Report: It was MSC to approve the meeting minutes dated 05/04/07.

 

Treasurer’s Report:  The balance on hand is 5673.57. There are no outstanding bills for approval.

 

Guest Speaker: Jim Martin, Kitsap Visitors’ and Convention Bureau

 

Jim shared a wealth of information regarding his organization’s services, sponsorship of community events, and successes experienced for the greater Kitsap Peninsula. The Kitsap Visitors’ and Convention Bureau’s primary mission is to promote economic growth through tourism. Some key numbers include:

 

  • $237.5 million spent on tourism in Kitsap County in 2005
  • #3 in hotel occupancy rates in the state

 

The bureau has a strong advertising presence utilizing a variety of media including print, radio, and television. The bureau’s web site is highly regarded. The address is www.visitkitsap.com . Jim can be reached at (360) 440-7084.

 

KPBA Committee Reports:

Agricultural Committee: Pierce County will be organizing a farm tour for some time in the fall. More information will be forthcoming.

 

Key Center Community Sign: The KPBA has deeded their portion of the sign ownership to the KPCC.

 

 

Marketing Committee: The web site is up and running again. Laurie Ellis deserves thanks for her efforts. A reprinting of the KPBA’s community brochure will cost approx. 1706.00 for 3000 if only edited for changes and re-printed at Northwoods Graphics. Several members suggested getting additional bids. This will depend on who owns the rights to the previous work. Jud and Bek will research.

 

Lois and Bek will work on putting together member certificates for display in local businesses. Lois has already done a great deal of work on these.

 

Fire Commissioner Letter:  Several other organizations have written, or are writing letters similar to the letter written by the KPBA. Lois reminded everyone that it is prudent to withhold judgment upon recent events, especially given the values our society holds dear.

 

Key Peninsula Community Plan The draft is available for public review and input prior to finalizing. The final meeting for community input will be on 5/23/2007.  It will be held at the Key Peninsula Lutheran Church. The meeting will begin at 7:00 pm. Written input will be accepted until May 25th.

 

 

Individual Reports:

Marty Marcus Signing up Herpetological Society members for this summer’s Key Peninsula Community Fair.

 

Joe Rhea Lake Kathryn is slowly approaching requirements for the stop light at the intersection.

 

Joyce Tovey Traditionally a slower time before the summer rush.

 

Laurie & Genevieve Ellis Ellis Accounting will remain at their present location through the end of September, and will keep members posted on any future location changes.

 

Bret Nebel Focusing marketing efforts on qualified prospective clients with a specific need for improved air quality in their home or workplace.

 

Laurie Jones Attending first meeting representing the Beach Hut and Home Laundry Mat.

 

Marlise Van Cise Recently booked a 78 day cruise for 78 for two clients. The adventure will take them on a circumnavigation of the African continent

 

Ed Taylor The motel business is doing well.

 

Jim Guinn The auto shop near Key Center, formerly Morelands’ Automotive, is fully owned by the new proprietors. Many changes are in the works including a remodeled waiting room. There is an ongoing contest to pick a new name for the business.

 

Ruth Bramhall Several KBPA members did a great job staffing the booth at the Livable Community Fair. Remember to support the summer fair through a sponsorship donation. Youth Night will feature Karaoke. The fair will also have a mechanical bull this year.

 

Lois McMahan Three initiatives are in circulation addressing property rights, taxation, and governmental funding services to illegal aliens. Please review these initiatives and consider supporting them.

 

Claude Gahard Trillium Creek’s Cheese Tasting was recently featured in the Gateway. Trillium is proud to carry Estrella Cheese, a truly handcrafted local product. Let’s get a bakery out here!

 

Barbara Heard Sound Credit Union will be offering business accounts starting mid-June.  The KPBA Road Clean-up is scheduled for June 9th.

 

Bek Ashby It’s still a good time to move your adjustable rate mortgage to a fixed rate. Remember to talk to North Bay Mortgage.

 

Lynn Marshall Still in negotiations regarding locations. If things go according to plan, Blondie’s By the Bay (the former Beach House) will become a new location, and Blondie’s on the Bluff (Key Center) will become a sports bar.

 

Chuck West The Fire Dept. has the new Medic Unit in service. Herron Island will get back their medic unit. The Dept. has a new brush fire rig provided by the DNR.  An upcoming L& I inspection is approaching. The dept. is surplusing several older pieces of equipment. 68 firefighter and paramedic candidates will begin testing for 3 positions. The Fire Dept donated their old pick-up truck to the Park District. KC Auto donated all the maintenance and repair work.

 

Skate Park pouring is scheduled for June 27th and 28th.
