Guest Speaker: LT. Larry Bauer

Pierce County Sheriff’s Office

Peninsula Detachment

Lt. Bauer provided an update of services and staffing for the peninsulas, offering specific details for the Key Peninsula. Lt. Bauer fielded numerous questions from the attendees. Below is a summary of information shared.

The Peninsula Detachment consists of 28 employees and three volunteers. Generally two patrol officers are on duty at any given time, covering both the peninsulas. Scheduling allows for overlap of shifts so sometimes an additional two to four officers may be on duty during transitional hours.

In addition to patrol officers, the detachment has a Community Service Officer who provides support and resources for community members who wish to address a specific issue. Two Neighborhood Policing Deputies, one for each peninsula, are officers that work with community members to solve previously identified problems.

Statistics suggest crime has decreased somewhat from 2005 to 2006. This may in part relate to the increase in the pro-active incidents the department has initiated. Local crime continues to be driven by the effects of drug addiction, chiefly to methamphetamines.

The detachment continues to evolve in an effort to serve the changing needs of the community.  Technology is increasing officer efficiency.

Business/Committee Reports:

Planning Board: The meeting, held on 02/21/2007, focused on community character and how to incorporate possible community themes into commercial growth.

Community Council: The meeting was scheduled for 02/21/07. This meeting may have been consolidated with the Planning Board meeting on the same night as both were addressing related issues.

Individual Reports

Jud Morris: Solicited interest in a speaker discussing marketing and public relations ideas for local business owners.

Ruth Bramhall: Tom Ashley has joined the fair board as treasurer. Ruth talked to Kurt Self of the KPLL regarding support for fair ticket sales. The board is hopeful to provide a tractor exhibition at the fair. It appears Agri-Vision will be larger this year. The fair is looking for a volunteer to head up parking. Donations are needed, as are volunteers to solicit donations from the community.

Glen Ehrhardt: Harvest Timber Company, located on the Key Peninsula, provides high grade wood products to the custom building industry nationwide, including flooring, and timbers for post and beam construction.

Mike Salantino: Remember to donate to the Phil Radcliffe Benefit Dinner. Tickets are on sale at several locations including at Costless Drugs, Sunnycrest Nursery, and the Homeport Restaurant.

Lois MacMahan: Enjoyed her son’s wedding this past weekend. There were over 600 guests in attendance.

Chuck West: The fire department has opened the bid for a new ambulance.  The department is also looking to replace the old brush rig, a staff vehicle, and a water tender. A paramedic and firefighter are currently in training at the fire academy. The department hopes to add three more paramedics by the end of the year. There is a possibility that two new fire commissioners’ positions will be added, bringing the total to five.

The skate park to be located at Volunteer Park looks to be on schedule for this summer.

Barbara Heard: Sound’s Annual auto refinance promotion will be offered in March. Sound is presently offering a 6 month  CD  at 5.5%.

Lynn Marshall: Blondie’s is working to earn the community’s business. There has been a good response to the new menu.

Betty Jopp: Recently purchased BoMac Concrete along with her son. Looks forward to working with community members.

Tara Froode: Business continues to grow. Ravensara had its first $1000 day on Valentine’s Day.

Marty Marcus: Requests for programs are starting to come in.

Joyce Tovey: The housing market appears to be picking up somewhat. Many of the stronger markets appear to be seeing the increase.

Marvin Keizur: Business is in the heart of the busy season. The Annual Lions Volunteer of the Year Diner is scheduled for March 10th. Tickets can be purchased at Sunnycrest Nursery and the Home Store.

Ed Taylor: The DNR Appraisal on the proposed 360 acre property came in too high to make outright acquisition feasible at this time. A 35 yr lease of the property may turn out to be another possibility.

Respectfully Submitted, Todd Rosenbach
