Minutes for Friday, August 3, 2007

Present: Vice President Claudia Loy
and President Jud Morris presiding. Barb Heard, Ruth Bramhall, Marty Marcus,
Laurie Ellis, Mike Fay, Scott Gallacher, Mark Jones, Hugh McMillan,
Mike Salatino, Lois McMahan, Bret Nebel, Todd Rosenbach, Chuck West and Suzette
Gould.
Meeting called to order at 7:32am. Introductions were made.
Guest Speakers: None
Secretary’s Report/Corres: It was MSC to approve
the minutes from July 6, 2007.
Treasurers Report: Laurie reported a balance
on hand of $5678.45. It was MSC to
approve the $30 monthly website fee to RS Enterprises as an ongoing bill.
Communications:
Presentation:
- Scott Gallacher did a Salmon Recovery
Funding Board Presentation and asked for support to get Pierce County to purchase 39 acres
by Taylor Bay. It was MSC that the KPBA would
write a letter of support for the attempt of acquisition of 39 acres by Taylor Bay. Jud Morris will write the letter.
- Hugh McMillan did a presentation on Peninsula Schools Education
Foundation and asked for support at their annual breakfast fundraiser
being held at Canterwood on October 17th at 7:00am. A table for 8 people would be $400. Todd will contact KPBA members about
buying individual tickets for $50.
- Mike Salatino asked the KPBA for a letter of support regarding the
traffic light to be installed at 94th. Don Zimmerman from Lake Kathryn Shopping Center has to pay all the
costs. It was MSC to send a
letter to Don Zimmerman in support of the traffic light. Discussion ensued regarding the Key Peninsula not getting their fair
share from taxes for road improvements.
Mike said 75% of our property taxes designated for roads are going
elsewhere (Eastern Washington). It
was suggested to write letters to Terry Lee and the Public Works
department. Chuck West will e-mail
contact information. Another
discussion ensued regarding the need for a September After Hours meeting
to discuss an overall strategy on how the KPBA can impact the media,
political process, and discuss our approach on various issues. Ruth will decide on the date for this
meeting.
Old Business/Committees:
- Brochures – Bret stated that only paid members could have ads in
the brochure. He will e-mail or
mail the information form to everyone on the paid list. It was MSC to set aside up to
$200 to pay someone to help input information and for mailing costs.
- KP Fair – Ruth said the Executive Board would be meeting next
Tuesday. She expects any remaining bills and sponsor
dollars to be in by then.
- Earthquakes – Marty will contact U. of W. and the US Geological
Survey to get a luncheon speaker.
- Marketing – No report per Claudia.
New Business:

Luncheon Location – McCauley Hall at the KP Lutheran Church and the
Whitmore Room at the Civic Center were both suggested. It was MSC to have the KPBA luncheon
meetings at the KP Civic Center. The
cost is $25 per hour. Jud will ask for a
discount since the KPCC is a member of the KPBA. Lunch will be catered on a rotating basis between
On The Way Deli and The Lil’ Beach Hut. The price will be $10 per person and bring
your own beverage.
Individual
Reports:
Ruth said the Salmon Bake served 460 people.
Scott said 3 Movie Nights are planned are planned for
August, the first one is tonight at 8:30. In the event of rain, the location moves to
the Civic Center. He also said the grand opening celebration
for the skate park would be Friday, August 10th at 3:00pm.
Suzette from Key Bank is the business banker for the
peninsulas.
Mark (Home Laundromat & Lil’ Beach Hut) mentioned the
Beyond the Borders music event tomorrow.
Hugh said to e-mail him with information for the Gateway.
Chuck said the Fire Dept. is hiring 3 new paramedics and
the top candidates are female. The
firefighters union is spearheading the effort to pass the levy. He also mentioned that the Community Plan is
being reviewed one more time by the Community Development Committee on Monday,
August 6th at 5:30pm. Applications are being taken for the KP
Advisory Commission (reviewing land use applications).
Todd said the market has been volatile lately, but it’s
time to shop because there are buys.
Bret stated that his business is growing.
Lois is busy placing international students in area homes.
Barb said Sound Credit Union would be going to digital
signature pads on Tuesday.
Mike is trying to find a new tenant for The Farm.
Marty is having a challenge being in two places at one
time with his snakes.
Claudia said SunnyCrest Nursery is in a quiet month. An upcoming dinner & dance is scheduled
for August 18th at the Civic
Center. Flavor of Fall is
coming again this year.
Jud said Children’s Home Society increased his grant
request of $60k to $70k a year for 3 years.
