Mike shared his extensive experience in business, focusing specifically on many of the marketing strategies that have helped North Bay Mortgage grow into a successful business with strong regional name recognition.  Mike briefly presented his educational background, work experience, and background in the mortgage industry prior to founding his own business. He explained how lessons learned helped to shape efforts going forward in building his own business. Mike then directed most of his attention to developing a successful marketing strategy for a small business.

Key Concepts included:

Marketing doesn’t have to be expense

North Bay Mortgage was started in a spare bedroom with about $500

Homemade flyers hand delivered door to door represented initial marketing efforts

Define your market

Know who your market is and what they need. Overextending yourself means you’re spending less time with those you’re likely to be able to serve

Use Technology

Publish a newsletter and develop a mailing list of contacts. Make sure the newsletter highlights topics of local interest

Be available

Membership in organizations provides opportunities to talk to others

Get out, walk and talk to others

Stick with what works

North Bay’s pen promotion started with 200 pens

Over 1.3 million pens have been distributed to date

Set yourself apart

The pens and the Fire Truck have become identifiable promotional tools across a broad area

Have Fun

Encourage all staff members to get involved in various community activities

Sponsor and/or participate in community fairs, events

Easter Egg Hunt, Santa Claus, etc

Invite people into your business for non-business related events

Be yourself

All your best marketing efforts will be wasted if service does not support the product you’ve marketed.
